The Art of Growing and Showing Alstroemeria Peruvian Lily .
Alstromeria. (Peruvian Lily). This plant can cause problems to the amateur grower, but it is really well worth the effort. Lets see what are its recommendations. It flowers in July; the best strains have flowers of orange, red, yellow and mauve, all colours have variations splashed and veined red. The plants grow about 2 feet high, and they love a sunny site. Wonderful for cutting for indoor decoration.
The commonly advised way to grow the Alstroemeria Peruvian Lily hardy border plant is in good well drained soil in a warm south facing border, but I have grown them in an border facing east in Worcestershire.
The roots are tuberous, and need a soil through which the winter rains pass readily. On heavy soils the roots will rot in winter. But any ordinary soil may be made suitable for them by digging in some well rotted garden compost and course sand. We have an article on making your own organic garden compost at:->
http://gardencomposthelp.blogspot.com
the tuberous roots should be planted in October about 5-6 inches deep, allowing about 12 inches between each root.
Perhaps one of the reasons why the hardy Border Plant Alstroemeria Peruvian Lily went out of favour is because the grower complained that they do not last long in bloom, but more often than not this is because the faded flowers are not picked off and so seed forms. Very much like the Sweet Pea flowers, if the blooms are not picked every day the flowers go to seed and this puts an end to blooming.
We have found a very good strong growing variety, which has been bred especially for the cut-flower market, its name is Alstroemeria Peruvian Lily ‘Ligtu Hybrids’ this variety of Alstroemeria has pink, rose, salmon, yellow and other delicate shades of flowers, it is sensitive to root disturbance so once planted leave it be. Enjoys an open sunny border.
We hope you have enjoyed this months Blog.
